Sophia University, located in central Tokyo, was founded in 1913 by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and is one of Japan's leading private universities. The FLA offers a comprehensive program in the humanities, international business and economics, and social studies. In addition to our degree students, we annually welcome exchange students from leading universities overseas. We also staff the Graduate Program in Global Studies, which offers M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Global Studies and Japanese Studies, and an M.A. degree in International Business and Development Studies.

The Faculty of Liberal Arts (FLA), Sophia University, invites applications for a position in sociology in the topics of family, work, or migration. The geographic area of expertise is open, and a transnational, global or comparative perspective is desirable. The successful applicant will teach in the undergraduate Social Studies Area and the Graduate Program in Global Studies.

The successful applicant is expected to maintain an active research agenda in their discipline. Your expertise will contribute to a community of globally minded scholars and educators. Faculty research is supported by the Sophia Research Organization and Sophia Research Institutes. Faculty must fulfill educational, research, and administrative duties in the operation of the department and faculty and participate in admissions duties in the FLA. Faculty must also carry out administrative duties required by Sophia University.

The successful applicant is expected to teach an introductory course in sociology, a course in qualitative or quantitative research methods, and intermediate and advanced courses in the areas of their specialization. Faculty teach one course in the Graduate Program in Global Studies. The language of instruction is English; Japanese language ability would be an asset though not required. The teaching load is four courses the first year (two/two), and five courses the next year (two/three), on a two-year rotation. A course meets twice a week for one hundred minutes each class.

Hiring is at the rank of assistant professor, which is a five-year tenure-track appointment, or associate professor, which is tenured. The candidate is expected to have a Ph.D. in sociology in hand by September 1, 2023, and a strong record of scholarly publications. Teaching experience is expected. The appointment begins in April or September 2024. Our faculty is committed to promoting gender balance, and we have a strong preference to hire a female candidate (Positive Action).
